Gouldian Finches have long been prized for their showstopping cloak of rainbow feathers. While various colour combinations exist in the wild, it’s their heads that truly set them apart. The majority of the birds have black heads, but keep your eyes peeled, as about one third are red-heads, with another tiny percentage in rare yellow or orange.

Gouldian Finches may be pretty to look at, but studies have proven that their different colours are related to evolutionary advantages, survival strategies, and even personality traits. Red-headed males, for example, are the most competitive and dominant, while female finches can even control the sex of their offspring, depending on which male head colour they choose.
