The Elegance of Africa

Wise, stoic, and deeply interconnected, the African bush elephant and forest elephant encapsulate the beauty of this vast continent and are essential to the large ecosystem around them. Characterized by their strong familial bonds and intelligence as a species, these creatures form the centerpiece of our Elegance of Africa  collection.  Featuring the SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola, captured in stunning new color greige and featuring 822 crystal facets, this crystal creation represents the grace and dynamism of the Elephant grandmother who leads her herd. 

To commemorate the release of this breathtaking crystal creation, designed by Martin Zendron, we’ve collected everything you need to know about the wonders of the African Elephant. 

The African elephant is found from the rainforests of Central and Western Africa to the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. While the African elephant’s ears resemble the shape of the vast African continent, its cousin, the Asian elephant, has ears which resemble the outline of the Indian subcontinent.  

For African elephants, the female acts as the dominant head of the family, and as the matriarch of her herd, she leads the elephants on their long migration. The SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola depicts this Elephant matriarch, with the African origin name Fayola meaning the ”one who walks with honor”. With pride and strength, the oldest and most experienced female elephant grandmother takes charge of the herd which can range from three to twenty-five elephants. 

優しい巨大なこの動物は、セレンゲティの広大な平原の暑さの中でも、悠々と暮らしています。陸上で最も大きい動物で、背の高さは2.4～4m近くもあり、体重は2.2～6.4トンほどにもなります。この大きな体を維持し、移動し続ける生態から、一日の4分の3を食べ物を探すのに費やすのも不思議ではありません。

ゾウの特徴はその勇壮な姿だけではありません。彼らは、照り付ける強い日差しの下で過酷な状態に対応できるよう進化した素晴らしい体の構造をしています。アフリカ草原の焼けるような暑さでも、彼らの皮膚は涼しくいられるようにできており、日焼けもしないのです。2.5cmもの厚みがある強い皮膚には体中にしわがあり、水分の蒸発を防いでいます。この驚異的な皮膚を、SCS Elephant初の新しいカラー、グレージュを使ったクリスタルで再現しました。実は、ゾウの皮膚は私たちが想像するほど丈夫ではないので、彼らは強い日差しから皮膚を守るために背中に砂をかけます。これも、彼らが生きる上での工夫の現れです。 
 
非常に高い知性を持つダイナミックなこの動物は、この世に生を受けてわずか20分後には、自分の足で立つことができるようになります。そんな感動の瞬間をとらえたのが、クリスタルでできたゾウの赤ちゃんMadisaです。生まれて2日後には群れと一緒に歩けるようになり、タンザニア北部に位置するセレンゲティを移動する群れを導くおばあちゃんゾウFayolaの温かい目に見守られながら、他のゾウたちと一緒に移動を続けます。 

Qu'il s'agisse de ramasser un objet, de trouver de la nourriture, d’arracher l'écorce d'un arbre ou de se défendre contre une attaque, les impressionnantes défenses en ivoire de l'éléphant sont en réalité des dents qui ont évolué pour répondre à de nombreux besoins essentiels. Puissantes, majestueuses et enveloppées d'un émail durable, les défenses en ivoire sont présentes aussi bien chez les éléphants d'Afrique mâles que chez les femelles, et chaque éléphant a une défense dominante – tout comme les humains ont une main dominante. 

Chef-d'œuvre de conception, la trompe de l'éléphant est bien plus polyvalente qu'on ne pourrait l'imaginer. Cet outil multifonctionnel est constitué de muscles, ce qui confère à l'éléphant la force et la souplesse nécessaires pour déraciner des arbres, ramasser délicatement de petits objets ou arracher des feuilles. La prodigieuse trompe de l'éléphant, en plus de sentir, boire et pulvériser de l'eau, permet également à l'animal de communiquer à des kilomètres de distance. Grâce à sa trompe, l'éléphant génère des signaux sismiques, c'est-à-dire des vibrations dans le sol, que les autres animaux perçoivent à travers leurs os. 
 

Pourtant, ces éléphants sont en voie de disparition. Malheureusement, le commerce illégal de l'ivoire a fait disparaître 9 éléphants d'Afrique sur 10 au cours du siècle passé. Aujourd'hui, il n'en reste plus que 415 000 à l'état sauvage. Il s'agit là d'un rappel brutal : nous devons chérir et protéger ces magnifiques créatures et préserver leur place sur cette terre. 

Notre création en cristal, qui illustre toute la beauté stoïque de cette grand-mère éléphant, permettra, nous l'espérons, de mettre en avant la nature douce de ces fantastiques créatures et d'insister sur la nécessité de protéger l'éléphant d'Afrique et son habitat.
