Elegance of Africa

Sages, stoïques et profondément liés les uns aux autres, les éléphants d’Afrique, de brousse et de forêt, incarnent toute la beauté de ce vaste continent et sont essentiels au vaste écosystème qui les entoure. Caractérisés par leurs liens familiaux très étroits et la grande intelligence de leur espèce, ces créatures constituent la pièce maîtresse de notre collection Elegance of Africa.  Avec SCS ÉDITION ANNUELLE 2022 Éléphant Fayola en vedette, immortalisée dans l’étonnante nouvelle couleur grège, cette création en cristal présentant 822 facettes illustre à merveille la grâce et le dynamisme de la grand-mère Éléphant qui guide son troupeau. 

Pour accompagner le lancement de cette éblouissante création en cristal signée Martin Zendron, nous avons rassemblé pour vous tout ce qu’il faut connaître sur le merveilleux éléphant d'Afrique. 

On retrouve l'éléphant d'Afrique aussi bien dans les forêts pluviales d'Afrique centrale et occidentale que dans les savanes d'Afrique sub-saharienne. Si les oreilles de l'éléphant d'Afrique rappellent la forme du vaste continent africain, celles de son cousin d'Asie ressemblent au contour du sous-continent indien.  

Chez les éléphants d'Afrique, la femelle assume le rôle de chef de famille et, en tant que matriarche de son troupeau, elle guide les éléphants au fil de leur longue migration. L'Édition annuelle SCS 2022 Éléphant Fayola représente la matriarche du troupeau, et le nom d'origine africaine, Fayola, signifie « celle qui marche avec dignité ». À la fois fière et forte, la grand-mère éléphant est la plus ancienne et la plus expérimentée du groupe. C'est elle qui assume la responsabilité du troupeau, qui peut compter de trois à vingt-cinq individus. 

These gentle giants stand tall in the heat of the vast planes of the Serengeti. As the world’s largest land animal their height ranges between a towering 8ft and 13 ft. Elephants weigh anywhere between 5000—14,000 lbs . With their large stature and roaming ways, it is no surprise that they spend over three-quarters of their day consuming food on their migration journey.

Elephants don’t just look majestic their complete anatomy is adapted for the often-inhospitable conditions of their natural habitat under the blazing sun. In the scorching heat of Africa’s plains, the elephant’s skin helps them to stay cool and avoid sunburn. With tough skin that is 2.5cms thick, the many wrinkles on the surface of their bodies help them to save water. It is this impressive skin that is captured in crystal with the new color greige featured for the first time on the SCS Elephant. But the skin of elephants is not as tough as people think, to protect their skin from the sun, elephants sprinkle sand onto their backs, another sign of their ingenious natures. 
 
As a highly intelligent species, these dynamic creatures make incredible leaps soon after birth with elephant calves learning to stand just 20 minutes after they arrive into the world . A milestone which is captured in our cheeky Baby Elephant Madisa crystal creation. After two days, the newest additions can keep up with the herd, as the elephants continue to roam and migrate under the watchful eye of the grandmother Fayola who leads them across the Serengeti. 

Of een olifant nu een object optilt, voedsel zoekt, schors van een boom haalt of zichzelf verdedigt tijdens een aanval: de schitterende ivoren slagtanden zijn geëvolueerd voor vele essentiële doeleinden. De ivoren slagtanden zijn sterk, majestueus en omhuld door stevig glazuur. Zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke Afrikaanse olifanten hebben slagtanden en elke olifant heeft een dominante slagtand, net zoals mensen een dominante hand hebben. 

De slurf is een waar meesterwerk en kan veel meer dan men zou denken. Deze veelzijdige tool bestaat uit spieren, waardoor de olifant de kracht en flexibiliteit heeft om bomen uit de grond te trekken maar ook kleinere objecten voorzichtig kan optillen en bladeren kan plukken. Met hun magnifieke slurf kunnen olifanten niet alleen ruiken, drinken en water sproeien, ze kunnen ook op kilometers afstand met elkaar communiceren. Olifanten gebruiken hun slurf om seismische signalen te geven of vibraties in de grond te creëren, die de dieren opvangen met hun botten. 
 

Deze olifanten worden echter bedreigd. Helaas is 90% van de Afrikaanse olifanten in de afgelopen 100 jaar weggevaagd vanwege de illegale ivoorhandel, waardoor er nog maar 415.000 olifanten in het wild leven. Een duidelijke herinnering dat we deze schitterende wezens moeten koesteren en beschermen, en hun plek op deze planeet moeten respecteren. 

We hopen dat onze kristalcreatie, die de stoïcijnse schoonheid van deze grootmoeder weergeeft, de zachte aard van deze prachtige wezens laat zien en benadrukt dat de Afrikaanse olifant en hun omringende habitat beschermd moeten worden.
