Elegance of Africa

Sages, stoïques et profondément liés les uns aux autres, les éléphants d’Afrique, de brousse et de forêt, incarnent toute la beauté de ce vaste continent et sont essentiels au vaste écosystème qui les entoure. Caractérisés par leurs liens familiaux très étroits et la grande intelligence de leur espèce, ces créatures constituent la pièce maîtresse de notre collection Elegance of Africa.  Avec SCS ÉDITION ANNUELLE 2022 Éléphant Fayola en vedette, immortalisée dans l’étonnante nouvelle couleur grège, cette création en cristal présentant 822 facettes illustre à merveille la grâce et le dynamisme de la grand-mère Éléphant qui guide son troupeau. 

Pour accompagner le lancement de cette éblouissante création en cristal signée Martin Zendron, nous avons rassemblé pour vous tout ce qu’il faut connaître sur le merveilleux éléphant d'Afrique. 

On retrouve l'éléphant d'Afrique aussi bien dans les forêts pluviales d'Afrique centrale et occidentale que dans les savanes d'Afrique sub-saharienne. Si les oreilles de l'éléphant d'Afrique rappellent la forme du vaste continent africain, celles de son cousin d'Asie ressemblent au contour du sous-continent indien.  

Chez les éléphants d'Afrique, la femelle assume le rôle de chef de famille et, en tant que matriarche de son troupeau, elle guide les éléphants au fil de leur longue migration. L'Édition annuelle SCS 2022 Éléphant Fayola représente la matriarche du troupeau, et le nom d'origine africaine, Fayola, signifie « celle qui marche avec dignité ». À la fois fière et forte, la grand-mère éléphant est la plus ancienne et la plus expérimentée du groupe. C'est elle qui assume la responsabilité du troupeau, qui peut compter de trois à vingt-cinq individus. 

Tito něžní obři snáší vedro rozlehlých plání Serengeti. Jakožto největší suchozemská zvířata na světě dosahují sloni výšky mezi 2,5 až 4 metry. Hmotnost slonů se pohybuje mezi 2,5 až 6,3 tunami. S takovou postavou a při neustálém toulání není žádným překvapením, že více než tři čtvrtiny dne tráví konzumací potravy při cestě.

Sloni nejen vypadají majestátně, ale celá jejich anatomie je přizpůsobená často nehostinným podmínkám přirozeného prostředí pod sálajícím sluncem. Ve spalujícím žáru afrických plání pomáhá slonům jejich kůže zachovat chlad a chrání je před spáleninami od slunce. Díky kůži, která je 2,5 cm silná, a mnoha vráskám na povrchu těla, dokáží sloni zadržovat v těle vodu. A právě tato úchvatná kůže je zachycena v křišťálu nové šedobéžové barvy, který je poprvé použitý na SCS Slona. Ale kůže slonů není tak odolná, jak si lidé myslí. Aby svou kůži chránili před sluncem, hází si sloni na záda písek, což je dalším znakem jejich důmyslnosti. 
 
Jako vysoce inteligentní druh dělají tato dynamická stvoření velké pokroky hned po narození. Sloní mláďata se učí stát už 20 minut po narození. Milník, který je zachycený v našem křišťálovém vyobrazení drzého slůněte Madisa. Po dvou dnech už nový přírůstek udrží krok se stádem, protože sloni dál bloumají a přesouvají se pod ostražitým dohledem babičky Fayoly, která je vede přes Serengeti. 

Whether an Elephant is picking up an object, finding food, stripping bark from trees, or defending itself from attack, its stunning ivory tusks are in fact teeth that have evolved for many essential purposes. Forceful, majestic, and wrapped in durable enamel the ivory tusks are seen on both male and female African elephants, and each elephant has a dominant tusk, just as humans have a dominant hand. 

A masterpiece of design, the Elephant’s trunk is capable of much more than we might think. This multitool is made up of muscle, giving the Elephant both strength and flexibility to uproot trees or delicately pick up smaller objects and pluck leaves. From smelling, drinking, and spraying water, the wonders of the Elephant’s truck also help the animal to communicate from miles apart. With its truck the Elephant creates seismic signals, or vibrations in the ground, which the animals pick up using their bones. 
 

But these elephants are endangered. Sadly, due to the illegal ivory trade 9 out of 10 African elephants have been wiped out in the past 100 years, leaving just 415,000 in the wild. A stark reminder that we should cherish and protect these beautiful creatures and respect their place on this earth. 

We hope our crystal creation portraying this grandmother elephant’s stoic beauty sheds light on the gentle nature of these wonderful creators, reiterating the need to protect the African Elephant and the habitat that surrounds it.
