La elegancia de África

Sabios, serenos y profundamente interconectados, el elefante africano de sabana y el elefante africano de bosque condensan la belleza de este vasto continente y son esenciales para el gran ecosistema que los rodea. Caracterizadas por ser una especie inteligente con fuertes lazos familiares, estas criaturas constituyen la pieza central de nuestra colección Elegancia de África.  Con la Elefante Fayola de la SCS Edición anual 2022, captada en un nuevo e impresionante color greige y con 822 facetas de cristal, esta creación de cristal representa la gracia y el dinamismo de la abuela elefanta que lidera su manada. 

Para conmemorar el lanzamiento de esta impresionante creación de cristal, diseñada por Martin Zendron, hemos reunido todo lo que necesitas saber sobre las maravillas del elefante africano. 

El elefante africano se encuentra desde las selvas tropicales de África central y occidental hasta las sabanas de África subsahariana. Mientras que las orejas del elefante africano se asemejan a la forma del vasto continente africano, su primo, el elefante asiático, tiene orejas que se asemejan al contorno del subcontinente indio.  

En el caso de los elefantes africanos, la hembra actúa como cabeza dominante de la familia y, como matriarca de la manada, dirige a los elefantes en su larga migración. La elefanta Fayola de la SCS Edición anual 2022 representa a esta matriarca de los elefantes, cuyo nombre de origen africano, Fayola, significa «la que camina con honor». Con orgullo y fuerza, la abuela elefanta más vieja y sabia se hace cargo de la manada, que oscila entre tres y veinticinco elefantes. 

These gentle giants stand tall in the heat of the vast plains of the Serengeti. As the world’s largest land animal, their height ranges between a towering 8ft and 13 ft. Elephants weigh anywhere between 5,000 and 14,000 lbs. With their large stature and roaming ways, it is no surprise that they spend over three-quarters of their day consuming food on their migration journey.

Elephants don’t just look majestic, their complete anatomy is adapted for the often inhospitable conditions of their natural habitat under the blazing sun. In the scorching heat of Africa’s plains, the elephant’s skin helps them to stay cool and avoid sunburn. With tough skin that is 2.5cm thick, the many wrinkles on the surface of their bodies help them to save water. It is this impressive skin that is captured in crystal, with the new colour greige featured for the first time on the SCS Elephant. But the skin of elephants is not as tough as people think, to protect their skin from the sun, elephants sprinkle sand onto their backs, another sign of their ingenious natures. 
 
As a highly intelligent species, these dynamic creatures make incredible leaps soon after birth, with elephant calves learning to stand just 20 minutes after they arrive into the world. A milestone which is captured in our cheeky Baby Elephant Madisa crystal creation. After two days, the newest additions can keep up with the herd, as the elephants continue to roam and migrate under the watchful eye of the grandmother Fayola who leads them across the Serengeti. 

Tanto si un elefante está recogiendo un objeto, buscando comida, arrancando la corteza de los árboles o defendiéndose de un ataque, sus impresionantes colmillos de marfil son en realidad dientes que han evolucionado para muchos fines esenciales. Contundentes, majestuosos y envueltos en un esmalte duradero, los colmillos de marfil se ven tanto en los elefantes africanos machos como en las hembras, y cada elefante tiene un colmillo dominante, igual que los humanos dominan una mano mejor que la otra. 

La trompa del elefante, una obra maestra del diseño, es capaz de hacer mucho más de lo que pensamos. Esta herramienta multiusos está hecha de músculo, lo que le da al elefante tanto fuerza como flexibilidad para arrancar árboles, recoger con delicadeza objetos más pequeños y arrancar hojas. Desde oler, beber y rociar agua, la maravillosa trompa del elefante también ayuda al animal a comunicarse a kilómetros de distancia. Con su trompa, el elefante produce señales sísmicas, o vibraciones en el suelo, que los animales captan con sus huesos. 
 

But these elephants are endangered. Sadly, due to the illegal ivory trade, 9 out of 10 African elephants have been wiped out in the past 100 years, leaving just 415,000 in the wild. A stark reminder that we should cherish and protect these beautiful creatures and respect their place on this earth. 

We hope our crystal creation portraying this grandmother elephant’s stoic beauty sheds light on the gentle nature of these wonderful creators, reiterating the need to protect the African Elephant and the habitat that surrounds it.
