The Elegance of Africa

Wise, stoic, and deeply interconnected, the African bush elephant and forest elephant encapsulate the beauty of this vast continent and are essential to the large ecosystem around them. Characterized by their strong familial bonds and intelligence as a species, these creatures form the centerpiece of our Elegance of Africa  collection.  Featuring the SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola, captured in stunning new color greige and featuring 822 crystal facets, this crystal creation represents the grace and dynamism of the Elephant grandmother who leads her herd. 

To commemorate the release of this breathtaking crystal creation, designed by Martin Zendron, we’ve collected everything you need to know about the wonders of the African Elephant. 

The African elephant is found from the rainforests of Central and Western Africa to the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. While the African elephant’s ears resemble the shape of the vast African continent, its cousin, the Asian elephant, has ears which resemble the outline of the Indian subcontinent.  

For African elephants, the female acts as the dominant head of the family, and as the matriarch of her herd, she leads the elephants on their long migration. The SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola depicts this Elephant matriarch, with the African origin name Fayola meaning the ”one who walks with honor”. With pride and strength, the oldest and most experienced female elephant grandmother takes charge of the herd which can range from three to twenty-five elephants. 

A gyengéd óriások kiemelkednek a Szerengeti végtelen síkságának melegéből. A világ legnagyobb szárazföldi állata 2,5–4 méter magas, míg súlya 2250 és 6350 kiló között van. Hatalmas testük és folytonos vándorlásuk tükrében nem csoda, hogy a nap több mint háromnegyedét evéssel töltik.

Az elefántoknak nem csak a megjelenése fenséges, hanem a teljes anatómiájuk alkalmazkodik természetes élőhelyük gyakran barátságtalan körülményeihez a tűző nap alatt. Az afrikai síkság perzselő hőségében az elefántot a bőre védi a meleg és a leégés ellen. A 2,5 centiméter vastag elefántbőr felszíne redős, ami segít a víz visszatartásában. Ezt ragadja meg kristály formájában az SCS Elefánt, elsőként alkalmazva az új szürkésdrapp színt. Az elefánt bőre azonban nem olyan ellenálló mint gondolnánk: a leleményes elefántok homokot szórnak a hátukra védekezésül a nap sugarai ellen. 
 
A faj nagyon intelligens, és az újszülött borjak hihetetlenül gyorsan fejlődnek, akik születésük után mintegy 20 perccel már megtanulnak a saját lábukon állni. Ezt a mérföldkövet örökíti meg a kristályból készült játékos Madisa kiselefánt. A család legkisebb tagjai már két nap elteltével képesek lépést tartani a csordával, ahogy Fayola nagymama féltő tekintete követi őket vándorlásaik során a Szerengeti-síkságon. 

Of een olifant nu een object optilt, voedsel zoekt, schors van een boom haalt of zichzelf verdedigt tijdens een aanval: de schitterende ivoren slagtanden zijn geëvolueerd voor vele essentiële doeleinden. De ivoren slagtanden zijn sterk, majestueus en omhuld door stevig glazuur. Zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke Afrikaanse olifanten hebben slagtanden en elke olifant heeft een dominante slagtand, net zoals mensen een dominante hand hebben. 

De slurf is een waar meesterwerk en kan veel meer dan men zou denken. Deze veelzijdige tool bestaat uit spieren, waardoor de olifant de kracht en flexibiliteit heeft om bomen uit de grond te trekken maar ook kleinere objecten voorzichtig kan optillen en bladeren kan plukken. Met hun magnifieke slurf kunnen olifanten niet alleen ruiken, drinken en water sproeien, ze kunnen ook op kilometers afstand met elkaar communiceren. Olifanten gebruiken hun slurf om seismische signalen te geven of vibraties in de grond te creëren, die de dieren opvangen met hun botten. 
 

Deze olifanten worden echter bedreigd. Helaas is 90% van de Afrikaanse olifanten in de afgelopen 100 jaar weggevaagd vanwege de illegale ivoorhandel, waardoor er nog maar 415.000 olifanten in het wild leven. Een duidelijke herinnering dat we deze schitterende wezens moeten koesteren en beschermen, en hun plek op deze planeet moeten respecteren. 

We hopen dat onze kristalcreatie, die de stoïcijnse schoonheid van deze grootmoeder weergeeft, de zachte aard van deze prachtige wezens laat zien en benadrukt dat de Afrikaanse olifant en hun omringende habitat beschermd moeten worden.
