The Elegance of Africa

Wise, stoic, and deeply interconnected, the African bush elephant and forest elephant encapsulate the beauty of this vast continent and are essential to the large ecosystem around them. Characterized by their strong familial bonds and intelligence as a species, these creatures form the centerpiece of our Elegance of Africa  collection.  Featuring the SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola, captured in stunning new color greige and featuring 822 crystal facets, this crystal creation represents the grace and dynamism of the Elephant grandmother who leads her herd. 

To commemorate the release of this breathtaking crystal creation, designed by Martin Zendron, we’ve collected everything you need to know about the wonders of the African Elephant. 

The African elephant is found from the rainforests of Central and Western Africa to the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. While the African elephant’s ears resemble the shape of the vast African continent, its cousin, the Asian elephant, has ears which resemble the outline of the Indian subcontinent.  

For African elephants, the female acts as the dominant head of the family, and as the matriarch of her herd, she leads the elephants on their long migration. The SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola depicts this Elephant matriarch, with the African origin name Fayola meaning the ”one who walks with honor”. With pride and strength, the oldest and most experienced female elephant grandmother takes charge of the herd which can range from three to twenty-five elephants. 

Ces paisibles résistent fièrement à la chaleur dans les vastes plaines du Serengeti. Les éléphants sont les plus grands animaux terrestres vivant sur la planète. Leur taille varie de 2,5 à 4,5 m et leur poids de 2 à 6 tonnes. Avec leur taille imposante et leur mode de vie migratoire, rien d'étonnant à ce qu'ils passent plus des trois quarts de leur journée à consommer de la nourriture pendant leurs déplacements.

Les éléphants n’ont pas seulement un aspect majestueux. Toute leur anatomie, jusqu'aux moindres détails, est adaptée aux conditions souvent hostiles de leur habitat naturel sous un soleil de plomb. Leur peau les aide à réguler leur température et leur permet d'éviter les insolations sous la chaleur accablante des plaines d'Afrique. Cet épiderme de 2,5 cm d'épaisseur incroyablement résistant est parcouru à la surface par d'innombrables rides leur permet préserver leur propre réserve d'eau. C'est cette peau remarquable qui est immortalisée dans notre cristal, dans la toute nouvelle couleur grège présentée pour la première fois avec ce SCS Éléphant. Cependant, la peau des éléphants n'est pas aussi robuste qu'on pourrait le croire. Pour la protéger du soleil, les pachydermes saupoudrent leur dos de sable, preuve supplémentaire de leur ingéniosité. 
 
C'est une espèce extrêmement intelligente, et ces créatures dynamiques sont capables de faire des progrès spectaculaires peu de temps après leur naissance. En effet, les éléphanteaux peuvent déjà se tenir debout 20 minutes à peine après leur arrivée au monde. Une étape majeure que nous avons saisie dans notre création en cristal de la coquine Bébé Éléphant Mandisa. Dès leur deuxième jour, les nouveaux nés peuvent déjà suivre le troupeau qui poursuit sa migration et se déplace à travers le Serengeti sous l'œil attentif de grand-mère Fayola. 

Ať už slon zvedá předmět, hledá potravu, strhává kůru ze stromů nebo se brání před útokem, jeho ohromující slonovinové kly jsou vlastně zuby, které se vyvinuly z několika zásadních důvodů. Slonovinové kly, silné, majestátní a obalené odolnou sklovinou, mají jak samci tak samice slona afrického. Každý slon má dominantní kel, stejně jako lidé mají dominantní ruku. 

Sloní chobot, mistrovské dílo designu, je daleko schopnější, něž bychom si možná mysleli. Tento multifunkční nástroj je tvořený svalem, dává slonovi sílu i flexibilitu vyrvat strom nebo jemně zvedat malé předměty a škubat listí. Úžasný sloní chobot zvládá čichání, pití a rozstřikování vody, navíc pomáhá slonům při komunikaci na míle daleko. Slon chobotem vytváří seismické signály nebo vibrace v zemi, které zvířata pomocí svých kostí zachycují. 
 

Ale tito sloni jsou ohrožení. Je smutné, že kvůli nelegálnímu obchodu se slonovinou bylo za posledních 100 let zabito 9 z 10 afrických slonů. V divočině jich zůstává jen 415 000. Drsná připomínka, že bychom si těchto nádherných stvoření měli vážit a měli bychom je chránit a respektovat jejich místo na zemi. 

Věříme, že náš křišťálový výtvor, zobrazující stoickou krásu této sloní babičky, vrhá světlo na něžnou povahu těchto úžasných tvorů a zdůrazňuje potřebu chránit afrického slona a prostředí, které jej obklopuje.
