Hoewel dit een goede regel is voor het dagelijkse leven, geldt deze niet meer wanneer u een kamer van kunstenaar James Turrell binnenloopt. Zodra u binnenloopt, ziet u de heldere en prachtige kwaliteit van de kleuren. U wilt langer blijven en voelt dat uw blik verruimd wordt. Het licht, dat zojuist een prachtige oranje kleur had, gaat over in een zachte en wazige lila kleur. De wanden verdwijnen achter een mist die er niet echt is. Hoeken stralen in contrasterende kleuren, worden scherper en gaan weer op in de wand. Als u zich omdraait, ziet u een wand die wit is maar nu schittert in groene, rode en blauwe kleuren.
De effecten van licht dat door kristal wordt gebroken en de regenboogkleuren die hieruit voortvloeien doen bezoekers van Swarovski Crystal Worlds al sinds de opening in 1995 verbazen. De nieuwe Wonderkamer laat een abstract en toch tastbare waarneming van licht zien. Carla Rumler, curator van Swarovski Kristallwelten, zegt over de nieuwste aanvulling op de inmiddels 18 Wonderkamers: “Als u zich open durft te stellen voor de kracht die licht heeft, dan zal Umbra een emotioneel en fysiek effect op u hebben.”

James Turrell’s installation “Umbra, 2022” adds a luminous facet to Swarovski Crystal Worlds, which also feature works by Yayoi Kusama and Lee Bul. The most recent artwork in the artist‘s shallow space series opens the visitor‘s perception: What is, at first sight, a beautifully illuminated room, draws you into its atmosphere. Light becomes the art piece in a Chamber of Wonder that goes from sharp edges to a dreamlike haze in the blink of an eye.
