La elegancia de África

Sabios, serenos y profundamente interconectados, el elefante africano de sabana y el elefante africano de bosque condensan la belleza de este vasto continente y son esenciales para el gran ecosistema que los rodea. Caracterizadas por ser una especie inteligente con fuertes lazos familiares, estas criaturas constituyen la pieza central de nuestra colección Elegancia de África.  Con la Elefante Fayola de la SCS Edición anual 2022, captada en un nuevo e impresionante color greige y con 822 facetas de cristal, esta creación de cristal representa la gracia y el dinamismo de la abuela elefanta que lidera su manada. 

Para conmemorar el lanzamiento de esta impresionante creación de cristal, diseñada por Martin Zendron, hemos reunido todo lo que necesitas saber sobre las maravillas del elefante africano. 

El elefante africano se encuentra desde las selvas tropicales de África central y occidental hasta las sabanas de África subsahariana. Mientras que las orejas del elefante africano se asemejan a la forma del vasto continente africano, su primo, el elefante asiático, tiene orejas que se asemejan al contorno del subcontinente indio.  

En el caso de los elefantes africanos, la hembra actúa como cabeza dominante de la familia y, como matriarca de la manada, dirige a los elefantes en su larga migración. La elefanta Fayola de la SCS Edición anual 2022 representa a esta matriarca de los elefantes, cuyo nombre de origen africano, Fayola, significa «la que camina con honor». Con orgullo y fuerza, la abuela elefanta más vieja y sabia se hace cargo de la manada, que oscila entre tres y veinticinco elefantes. 

These gentle giants stand tall in the heat of the vast planes of the Serengeti. As the world’s largest land animal their height ranges between a towering 8ft and 13 ft. Elephants weigh anywhere between 5000—14,000 lbs . With their large stature and roaming ways, it is no surprise that they spend over three-quarters of their day consuming food on their migration journey.

Elephants don’t just look majestic their complete anatomy is adapted for the often-inhospitable conditions of their natural habitat under the blazing sun. In the scorching heat of Africa’s plains, the elephant’s skin helps them to stay cool and avoid sunburn. With tough skin that is 2.5cms thick, the many wrinkles on the surface of their bodies help them to save water. It is this impressive skin that is captured in crystal with the new color greige featured for the first time on the SCS Elephant. But the skin of elephants is not as tough as people think, to protect their skin from the sun, elephants sprinkle sand onto their backs, another sign of their ingenious natures. 
 
As a highly intelligent species, these dynamic creatures make incredible leaps soon after birth with elephant calves learning to stand just 20 minutes after they arrive into the world . A milestone which is captured in our cheeky Baby Elephant Madisa crystal creation. After two days, the newest additions can keep up with the herd, as the elephants continue to roam and migrate under the watchful eye of the grandmother Fayola who leads them across the Serengeti. 

Ob ein Elefant einen Gegenstand aufhebt, nach Nahrung sucht, Rinde von Bäumen abzieht oder sich vor einem Angriff schützt, seine beeindruckenden Elfenbeinstoßzähne sind tatsächlich Zähne, die sich für viele bedeutsame Zwecke herausgebildet haben. Kraftvoll und majestätisch sind die Elfenbeinstoßzähne sowohl bei männlichen als auch bei weiblichen Afrikanischen Elefanten zu finden. Jeder Elefant hat einen dominanten Stoßzahn, genauso wie jeder Mensch eine dominante Hand hat. 

Der Elefantenrüssel ist ein Meisterwerk der Natur und kann so viel mehr, als wir uns vorstellen können. Als multifunktionsfähiges Organ besteht der Rüssel aus Muskeln, die dem Elefanten die Kraft und Flexibilität verleihen, Bäume zu entwurzeln oder vorsichtig kleinere Gegenstände aufzuheben und Blätter zu pflücken. Die Wunder des Elefantenrüssels reichen von Riechen und Trinken zu Versprühen von Wasser, wobei er auch genutzt wird, um über große Entfernungen mit anderen zu kommunizieren. Mit seinem Rüssel erzeugt der Elefant seismische Signale oder Bodenvibrationen, die die Tiere mithilfe ihrer Knochen spüren können. 
 

Diese Elefanten sind jedoch vom Aussterben bedroht. Leider wurden in den letzten 100 Jahren aufgrund des illegalen Elfenbeinhandels 9 von 10 Afrikanischen Elefanten getötet, sodass nur noch 415.000 in freier Wildbahn leben. Das ist ein unmissverständlicher Weckruf, dass wir diese wundervollen Geschöpfe schätzen und schützen müssen – und auch ihren Platz auf dieser Erde respektieren sollten. 

Wir hoffen, dass unsere Kristallkreation, die die stoische Schönheit der Elefantengroßmutter darstellt, die sanfte Natur dieser wunderbaren Geschöpfe verdeutlicht. Darüber hinaus soll bekräftigt werden, dass der Afrikanische Elefant und sein Lebensraum geschützt werden müssen.
