La elegancia de África

Sabios, serenos y profundamente interconectados, el elefante africano de sabana y el elefante africano de bosque condensan la belleza de este vasto continente y son esenciales para el gran ecosistema que los rodea. Caracterizadas por ser una especie inteligente con fuertes lazos familiares, estas criaturas constituyen la pieza central de nuestra colección Elegancia de África.  Con la Elefante Fayola de la SCS Edición anual 2022, captada en un nuevo e impresionante color greige y con 822 facetas de cristal, esta creación de cristal representa la gracia y el dinamismo de la abuela elefanta que lidera su manada. 

Para conmemorar el lanzamiento de esta impresionante creación de cristal, diseñada por Martin Zendron, hemos reunido todo lo que necesitas saber sobre las maravillas del elefante africano. 

El elefante africano se encuentra desde las selvas tropicales de África central y occidental hasta las sabanas de África subsahariana. Mientras que las orejas del elefante africano se asemejan a la forma del vasto continente africano, su primo, el elefante asiático, tiene orejas que se asemejan al contorno del subcontinente indio.  

En el caso de los elefantes africanos, la hembra actúa como cabeza dominante de la familia y, como matriarca de la manada, dirige a los elefantes en su larga migración. La elefanta Fayola de la SCS Edición anual 2022 representa a esta matriarca de los elefantes, cuyo nombre de origen africano, Fayola, significa «la que camina con honor». Con orgullo y fuerza, la abuela elefanta más vieja y sabia se hace cargo de la manada, que oscila entre tres y veinticinco elefantes. 

Sylwetki tych łagodnych olbrzymów górują nad rozgrzanymi upałem, rozległymi terenami Serengeti. To największe zwierzęta lądowe na świecie — ich wysokość w kłębie waha się od niemal 2,5 do nawet 4 metrów, a ważą od ponad 2 do ponad 6 ton. Biorąc pod uwagę ich postawną sylwetkę i wędrowny tryb życia, nic dziwnego, że ponad trzy czwarte dnia podczas swoich wędrówek poświęcają na zdobywanie pożywienia.

Majestatyczny wygląd słoni skrywa w sobie coś więcej niż piękno natury — cała anatomia tych zwierząt jest przystosowana do często niegościnnych warunków, jakie panują w ich naturalnym środowisku, zdominowanym przez palące słońce. W upale panującym na równinach Afryki skóra słoni pomaga im się schłodzić i uniknąć poparzeń słonecznych. Z kolei dzięki licznym bruzdom na powierzchni skóry, której grubość osiąga 2,5 cm, zwierzętom tym łatwiej jest oszczędzać wodę. To właśnie tę imponującą fakturę skóry udało się uchwycić w krysztale dzięki zastosowaniu nowego odcienia — Greige, którego użyto po raz pierwszy w figurce SCS Elephant. Słonie nie mają jednak aż tak grubej skóry, jak nam się wydaje. Aby chronić skórę przed słońcem, posypują sobie grzbiety piaskiem, co jest kolejnym potwierdzeniem ich przemyślnej natury. 
 
Jako wysoce inteligentny gatunek te pełne dynamizmu stworzenia dokonują niesamowitych postępów już w kilka chwil po narodzinach. Małe słoniątka stają na własne nogi po zaledwie 20 minutach od przyjścia na świat. Ten przełomowy moment udało nam się uchwycić w formie kryształowej figurki Baby Elephant Madisa o zawadiackim charakterze. Po dwóch dniach nowi członkowie stada są już w stanie dotrzymać kroku dorosłym słoniom, które mogą kontynuować swoją wędrówkę i migrację, a pieczę nad wszystkim sprawuje babcia-słonica Fayola, prowadząc stado przez równiny Serengeti. 

Whether an Elephant is picking up an object, finding food, stripping bark from trees, or defending itself from attack, its stunning ivory tusks are in fact teeth that have evolved for many essential purposes. Forceful, majestic, and wrapped in durable enamel the ivory tusks are seen on both male and female African elephants, and each elephant has a dominant tusk, just as humans have a dominant hand. 

A masterpiece of design, the Elephant’s trunk is capable of much more than we might think. This multitool is made up of muscle, giving the Elephant both strength and flexibility to uproot trees or delicately pick up smaller objects and pluck leaves. From smelling, drinking, and spraying water, the wonders of the Elephant’s truck also help the animal to communicate from miles apart. With its truck the Elephant creates seismic signals, or vibrations in the ground, which the animals pick up using their bones. 
 

But these elephants are endangered. Sadly, due to the illegal ivory trade 9 out of 10 African elephants have been wiped out in the past 100 years, leaving just 415,000 in the wild. A stark reminder that we should cherish and protect these beautiful creatures and respect their place on this earth. 

We hope our crystal creation portraying this grandmother elephant’s stoic beauty sheds light on the gentle nature of these wonderful creators, reiterating the need to protect the African Elephant and the habitat that surrounds it.
