The Elegance of Africa

Wise, stoic, and deeply interconnected, the African bush elephant and forest elephant encapsulate the beauty of this vast continent and are essential to the large ecosystem around them. Characterized by their strong familial bonds and intelligence as a species, these creatures form the centerpiece of our Elegance of Africa  collection.  Featuring the SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola, captured in stunning new color greige and featuring 822 crystal facets, this crystal creation represents the grace and dynamism of the Elephant grandmother who leads her herd. 

To commemorate the release of this breathtaking crystal creation, designed by Martin Zendron, we’ve collected everything you need to know about the wonders of the African Elephant. 

The African elephant is found from the rainforests of Central and Western Africa to the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. While the African elephant’s ears resemble the shape of the vast African continent, its cousin, the Asian elephant, has ears which resemble the outline of the Indian subcontinent.  

For African elephants, the female acts as the dominant head of the family, and as the matriarch of her herd, she leads the elephants on their long migration. The SCS Annual Edition 2022 Elephant Fayola depicts this Elephant matriarch, with the African origin name Fayola meaning the ”one who walks with honor”. With pride and strength, the oldest and most experienced female elephant grandmother takes charge of the herd which can range from three to twenty-five elephants. 

Deze vriendelijke reuzen houden zich staande in de hitte van de uitgestrekte vlaktes van de Serengeti. Olifanten zijn met een lengte van zo’n 2,5 tot 4 meter de grootste landdieren ter wereld en wegen tussen de 2000 en 6350 kilo. Door hun grote postuur en continue beweging is het vast geen verrassing dat ze meer dan driekwart van de dag bezig zijn met eten.

Olifanten zien er niet alleen majestueus uit: hun volledige anatomie is aangepast aan de vaak onherbergzame omstandigheden in hun natuurlijke habitat onder de brandende zon. In de intense hitte van de Afrikaanse vlaktes zorgt de huid van olifanten ervoor dat ze koel blijven en niet verbranden in de zon. Hun huid is 2,5 cm dik en door de vele rimpels aan het oppervlak van hun lichaam kunnen ze water opslaan. Deze indrukwekkende huid is in kristal vormgegeven met de nieuwe kleur ‘greige’ die voor het eerst te zien is op de SCS-olifant. De huid van de olifant is echter niet zo dik als men denkt. Olifanten strooien zand op hun rug om hun huid tegen de zon te beschermen, wat wederom een mooi voorbeeld is van hun vindingrijkheid. 
 
Deze dynamische wezens zijn zeer intelligent en zetten zelfs vlak na de geboorte al ongelooflijke stappen; olifantenkalveren kunnen slechts 20 minuten nadat ze worden geboren al staan. Een mijlpaal die is vastgelegd in onze ondeugende kristalcreatie Babyolifant Madisa. Na twee dagen kunnen de nieuwelingen de kudde bijhouden, terwijl de olifanten hun continue reis voortzetten onder het wakende oog van grootmoeder Fayola die hen over de Serengeti leidt. 

Tanto si un elefante está recogiendo un objeto, buscando comida, arrancando la corteza de los árboles o defendiéndose de un ataque, sus impresionantes colmillos de marfil son en realidad dientes que han evolucionado para muchos fines esenciales. Contundentes, majestuosos y envueltos en un esmalte duradero, los colmillos de marfil se ven tanto en los elefantes africanos machos como en las hembras, y cada elefante tiene un colmillo dominante, igual que los humanos dominan una mano mejor que la otra. 

La trompa del elefante, una obra maestra del diseño, es capaz de hacer mucho más de lo que pensamos. Esta herramienta multiusos está hecha de músculo, lo que le da al elefante tanto fuerza como flexibilidad para arrancar árboles, recoger con delicadeza objetos más pequeños y arrancar hojas. Desde oler, beber y rociar agua, la maravillosa trompa del elefante también ayuda al animal a comunicarse a kilómetros de distancia. Con su trompa, el elefante produce señales sísmicas, o vibraciones en el suelo, que los animales captan con sus huesos. 
 

Estos elefantes están en peligro de extinción. Lamentablemente, debido al comercio ilegal de marfil, se han exterminado 9 de cada 10 elefantes africanos en los últimos 100 años y solo quedan 415 000 en estado salvaje. Un triste recordatorio de que debemos valorar y proteger a estas hermosas criaturas y respetar su lugar en la tierra. 

Esperamos que nuestra creación de cristal que retrata la belleza estoica de esta abuela elefanta aclare la naturaleza gentil de estos maravillosos creadores y reitere la necesidad de proteger al elefante africano y el hábitat que lo rodea.
