Gouldamadines worden al lange tijd geprezen vanwege hun spectaculaire verenkleed in alle kleuren van de regenboog. Hoewel ze in het wild in verschillende kleurencombinaties voorkomen, vallen ze echt op door hun kopjes. Het merendeel van deze vogelsoort heeft een zwarte kop, maar ongeveer een derde heeft een rode kop en een nog kleiner percentage heeft een zeldzame gele of oranje kop.
