Według mitologii greckiej wszędzie, gdzie skrzydlaty koń Pegaz stuknął kopytem o ziemię, wytryskało źródło twórczej inspiracji, z którego czerpali wodę wszyscy poeci i inni ludzie pióra. Rzeźba jest oparta na podstawie w trzech punktach. Wykonanie tylnych nóg i ogona było w owym czasie nie lada osiągnięciem technicznym.
