As complex as it is captivating, the installation was influenced by the traditional Japanese legend of the red thread, which states that those who are destined to meet remain linked throughout their lives by invisible red threads. Chiharu Shiota has brought the legend to life, crafting a network of red woolen threads interwoven with delicate crystal beads to mesmerizing effect.
Individual Brilliance
Chiharu Shiota’s work unpicks the different layers of identity; our experiences may feel unique but are more universal than we might think. The importance of individuality is still recognized as the exhibit’s woolen threads eventually converge, pooling into a pair of feet, arms, and the hand of the artist, all crafted by Swarovski Manufaktur.
Ode to the Giant
The beloved Swarovski Kristallwelten Giant inspired Chiharu Shiota to revisit the tension that lies between the fact that we live in separate bodies but share a universe of thought. The Giant, with its head dissolving into the landscape, perfectly encapsulates the way our individual sense of self is shaped by the people we meet.
