Founder & visionary
Our Founder, Daniel Swarovski
Daniel Swarovski was born in Bohemia, Austria. His father was a glass cutter, like many in the mountainous area where he lived, and Daniel first learned the art of glass cutting in his father's small factory. He was educated in Paris and Vienna before returning to the Tyrol, with its abundance of clean fresh water, to establish his Swarovski Crystal business.
Following a visit to the International Electrical Exhibition in Vienna in 1883, Daniel realized that this new form of energy would transform industrial production and it led him to invent the world’s first electric-powered crystal cutting machine. His machine produced a level of clarity in crystal creation that had never been seen before, and enabled him to deliver on his vision of bringing luxury to all. He revealed the magic held within precision-cut crystals that allowed everyone - including the most glamorous women in the world – to shine with a new radiance. The House of Swarovski was born.
Daniel Swarovski was also an innovative leader in his business practices, establishing principles of fairness for communities, and the environment, that are still a guiding light for Swarovski today.  In particular he knew that water was crucial to Swarovski’s success, and must be treated as a precious resource.
Now, more than ever, we understand water’s role as the source of all life on earth. To honor Daniel’s legacy, the Swarovski Waterschool program was established in Austria in 2000, and has since evolved to become a global initiative operating within watershed areas of the world’s major rivers.
This work has ensured access to clean water for schools across the globe, and educated communities on sanitation, hygiene, and water conservation issues. Swarovski Waterschool empowers children to become water ambassadors by providing tools and training to address their local challenges.

Made in Austria, Since 1895

D. Swarovski & Co was the first incarnation of Swarovski. Wattens’ water supply was vital for hydroelectricity, alongside important transport links to Europe - especially Paris. The company has transformed and grown into hugely diverse areas, and its impact on style and culture has spread across the globe, but those same fresh alpine waters of Wattens still provide the energy required to cut the Swarovski Crystal from which everything else stems.

Future History

Since 1895, Swarovski has provided crystal to Haute Couture houses, leading to the development of deep creative bonds with designers and fashion’s true greats who have changed the way the world looks. Swarovski’s continuing creative exchange with international fashion houses represents a ceaseless fusion of heritage and invention.

Swarovski Created Diamonds

In 1895, Daniel Swarovski’s ambitious vision to offer a feeling of luxury to everyone led to the creation of Swarovski. With innovation and artistry in our DNA, it was a natural progression to embrace the diamonds of the future, laboratory grown diamonds. Our creative savoir-faire is now beautifully expressed in the Swarovski Created Diamonds collections that feature precision-cut laboratory grown diamonds that are 100% identical to mined diamonds in every way but origin.

Jewelry Milestones

For almost 50 years Swarovski has also created its own jewelry lines that have shimmered with joyful extravagance and captivating innovations. The first line was launched in 1977,  then the first luxury line Daniel Swarovski Paris launched in 1989. In 2020, Giovanna Engelbert became Swarovski’s Global Creative Director, launching her debut work, Collection One, and delivering a new dimension to Swarovski jewelry.

Masters of Light

Renowned for remarkable clarity and mesmerizing radiance, the savoir-faire of Swarovski Crystals, which has always combined exquisite artistry with visionary scientific advancements, has forged the House’s pre-eminence as Masters of Light. The result is a breathtaking brilliance captured in every meticulously-crafted stone.

Mathemagical

Every Swarovski Crystal is created in Austria, born in the Swarovski Manufaktur and crafted under one roof. The precise formulas behind Swarovski Crystal - over 5,000 unique variations of atomic structure - remain closely-guarded secrets. The result? Approximately 300,000 varieties of crystal cut, color, and effect, with over 135 different hues covering the entire spectrum of human vision. It’s what we describe as Mathemagical.

Pop Icons

From the earliest days of the 20th century, Swarovski has been a vehicle for creative artists - actors, musicians, icons - to project their own star power and their elusive magic. These individuals have reshaped contemporary culture across the globe. Their iconic wardrobes are an expression of their freedom and personal values and Swarovski is an essential component to communicate their creative attitudes.

Swarovski History

At Swarovski, we believe in transparency and the importance of being aware of history.

An Austrian economic historian was commissioned by the Swarovski family to write a book about Daniel Swarovski, the company’s founder, covering his life from 1862 to 1956. The family guaranteed the historian complete autonomy in his research, ensuring that his work was conducted without any influence or limitations. To aid in his investigation, the family provided unrestricted access to their archives. The book, titled “Es hätte können, alles ganz anders kommen….”, will be published by Böhlau in 2025.

While we cannot eradicate history, we can make sure that we learn from it, ensuring that our actions today are a force for good and drive positive change. Swarovski proudly and firmly stands for peace and humanity. Our mission is to make the world shine bright, which includes the light that comes from tolerance, inclusivity, and kindness.
