In celebration of this year’s Met Gala theme “Costume Art”, Swarovski presented three one-of-a-kind couture creations as imagined by Global Creative Director, Giovanna Engelbert. Unified by the idea of crystal as art itself, each design honored the House’s infinite savoir-faire and protagonist role in pop culture by exploring the relationship between artist, muse, and finished work of art. The looks seamlessly integrated Swarovski jewelry silhouettes to reflect the unique identity and personal history of their wearers.
Mesmerizing Muses
Venus Williams
Title:
Sleek, sculptural, and rich in symbolism, tennis icon Venus Williams’ black crystal-encrused gown radiated power and timeless beauty. The look drew from her Robert Pruitt portrait and the necklace Venus wore in the artwork, referencing her family, sports achievements, and roots in Compton, was faithfully recreated in sterling silver, hand-set with 3,800 Swarovski Zirconia and Crystals. The ensemble carried a sense of presence befitting her status as Met Gala co-chair while remaining deeply connected to her personal story.
Ejae
Title:
Oscar-winning singer/songwriter EJAE wore a gown influenced by neoclassical marble statues, traditional Korean craft, and the purity of crystal, a nod to Swarovski’s first crystal cut, Article One. Blending classical beauty with EJAE’s cultural identity, the design featured a Crystal Fine Mesh skirt and a corset encrusted using a technique that combines jewelry craftsmanship with embroidery. A custom shoulderpiece referenced Constella and Una Angelic influences and binyeo-inspired ornamental hairpins completed the look.
Giovanna Engelbert
Title:
In tribute to the craft behind creation, Giovanna Engelbert chose to wear the process, rather than the finished piece. Her ensemble praised the art of making, combining a corset featuring external construction lines with a layered organza foundation skirt beneath a Crystal Mesh apron that was finished with Hyperbola and Matrix detailing. The headpiece, developed with Stephen Jones, spoke to her role as Global Creative Director by depicting both an artist’s palette and the Swarovski Swan.
