Subtitle:As soon as Swarovski Crystals were introduced to the world, they exerted a mysterious fascination, combining precision cutting with the natural beauty of sunlight and the night sky. Daniel and his sons instinctively collaborated with couturiers, who were, in turn, inspired by the creative possibilities of Swarovski’s ever-evolving materials. The most distinctive were the iridescent Aurora Borealis crystals, which became the signature embellishment of Christian Dior in the 1950s.

Bold Designs
Giovanna’s approach to creating with crystals is, in a word, bold, letting the stones speak for themselves and styling them to harness their natural inner light. And to play with colour. ‘For me, colour is very important for the collection and something that I personally love,’ explains Giovanna. ‘The beauty is that it’s already embedded into the crystal itself.’
Creative Direction
In 2020, Swarovski engaged a company-wide Creative Director for the first time in its history. Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert's inaugural collection, Collection I, featured necklaces, earrings, rings, and body chains, with an emphasis on colour and geometry. It was named after Article No. 1, the first crystal Daniel Swarovski ever sketched, and was inspired by his hand drawings of crystals.

Throughout the decades, Swarovski’s unparalleled savoir-faire gave rise to trends and collaborations with dozens of fashion houses and designers including Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli. As our brand and reputation grew, so did our offering and creativity as we mastered bold new cuts including oval navette and elegant baguette cut crystals. We embraced the spirit of each passing zeitgeist, creating opulent pieces of glamorous jewellery that adorned celebrities, socialites, and all discerning lovers of luxury.

When Daniel Swarovski first produced his brilliant crystals, he changed the way the world perceived diamonds and jewellery. At a time when jewellery was worn only by the wealthy elite, Daniel recognised crystal's potential to infuse luxury and glamour into everyday jewellery and fashion, and have an empowering effect on women from all walks of life. His vision reshaped the fashion landscape, offering opulence to the masses.
Mesmerising Collaborations
For almost 130 years, Swarovski has turned heads on the red carpet and runways. From Olivier Rousteing’s first haute couture collection for Balmain to McQueen’s Swarovski Crystal Catsuit for the Deliverance show, technical innovation and savoir-faire keeps Swarovski at the forefront of fashion. When Donatella Versace was asked what Swarovski Crystals added to her unmistakable designs, she replied: ‘They add magic to every fabric.’
Swarovski & Dior: Partners in Style
The enduring partnership between Swarovski and Dior has produced some of the most captivating pieces in fashion history. Throughout the 1950s, crystals embellished many of Christian Dior’s most iconic designs, but in 1956, the partnership reached new heights with the creation of the Aurora Borealis effect. Named after the Northern Lights that deeply inspired Daniel, its unique reflective properties brought unprecedented movement and colour to Dior’s couture creations. From Yves Saint Laurent to John Galliano, the Aurora Borealis crystal effect continues to delight fashion’s most brilliant minds with its creative possibilities.
Swarovski in Fashion
The birth of Swarovski in 1895 coincided with the dawn of haute couture, so Daniel would travel to Paris’s first fashion houses, collaborating with everyone from Jean Patou to Pierre Cardin on new cuts and colours of crystals. His creations were a huge hit, and since then designers have relied on Swarovski Crystals to embellish their most dazzling looks for collections in New York, London, Paris, and Milan.
Swarovski on Stage & Screen
The story of Swarovski in entertainment goes back almost one hundred years to the early days of Hollywood, when its crystals made their debut in the Marlene Dietrich film Blonde Venus (1932). Fast forward to 2023 and Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour when the iconic singer opened her performance in Amsterdam in a breathtaking Iris van Herpen custom look embellished with thousands of Swarovski Crystals.
Swarovski Rocks
Through the ages of rock and roll, Swarovski has proudly shared the stage with many legendary showmen, creating decadent, fabulous costumes for Elvis, Elton John, and Queen. In 1972, Elvis Presley’s costume designer chose Swarovski Crystals to catch the light, creating the most famous glittering white jumpsuit in musical history. Elton, a devotee of sequins, feathers, and crystal-enrobed outfits, regularly collaborated with fashion designer Bob Mackie, and together the pair created dozens of spectacular costumes that would come to define Elton’s visual identity right up until his final tour.
