I am a huge fun of fresh ginger. An extraordinary root with a fragrant aroma that is spicy, sharp, and subtle all at once. I could have it from morning till night, in summer and winter, in hot or cold drinks, whether sweet or soothing, in candies or sauces – I absolutely love it! Originally from Asia, it is used in Japanese, Chinese, and Thai cuisine, my three favorite types of food. Energizing, warming, vitalizing, and stimulating, its benefits are all brought together like the little charms clustered around a cocktail spoon in a combination that I adore: Take the juice of half a lemon and half a squeezed lime, one cube of ice, a generous teaspoon of brown sugar, and a small chunk of peeled and crushed ginger (so you only get the pulp and not the fibrous strands). Mix it all up in a blender and add some ice-cold sparkling water. Pour into a glass rimmed with lemon juice and sugar, garnish, and enjoy!
