Between purchases at Paris’ fashion mecca, immerse yourself in the world of Belgian designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard (winner of the 2008 Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography) for a colorful and quirky detour. Surrealist, dreamlike, and satirical; it is a veritable theme park of an exhibition. You enter via a tunnel where a mysterious “spaceship”-style voice-over provides instructions about the experience that will follow. The floor is covered by an optical illusion in black and white, so mesmerizing that you almost trip over yourself. But “don’t worry, BEE happy!” Dressed as a bee, Jean-Paul Lespagnard takes us down a guided tour of the rituals and customs of impulse tourism, an invitation to follow him on his travels around Mexico’s Mayan Riviera. With technicolor sugar sculptures and photo booth images punctuated by silhouettes of fashion models, it is a dreamlike and wonderful walk through Sugarland. An amalgamation of art and humor, to be savored with delight.
