Book of the moment: Diana Vreeland

08.10.2013 | It makes my day

I absolutely love biographies. At the moment I am particularly enjoying Diana Vreeland’s. What an intriguing and vivacious character! I like to think that if I had been at Studio 54, we would have been sure to find one another. Diana Vreeland was a visionary, a free, bohemian soul who was anything but restrained. Considered as one of the most influential figures in American fashion, she was the editor in chief of Vogue in the US after having worked as fashion editor for Harper’s Bazaar.

To me, Diana Vreeland is an icon of fashion, a pioneer who pushed the boundaries of acceptance and aesthetics, who revolutionized perceptions of “chic” and “elegance.” This was a woman with high demands but who was inspired and who was inspiring to others. I love the anecdote that she would never call her assistants by their first names. Instead, she would summon them with the resounding call “girls!”. I have no doubt that I would have loved to have been one of her “girls” and to learn from this legend.

Vreeland, who had her office painted in the same bright shade of red as her scarlet lipstick, has had as much of an impression on me as she did on the world of fashion and art. She discovered great talents such as Lauren Bacall and numerous American stylists. This elegant icon, with her unusual physique, had a special relationship with jewelry. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone seeking a mini masterclass in chic and genius.
