It’s 1990 and in Seattle’s underground music scene a new and alternative rock sound is emerging – grunge.
More than a simple music trend, it was a radical aesthetic movement based on a rejection of materialism and social convention, and favoring individualism above all.
Its figurehead – Nirvana and their lead singer, Kurt Cobain, who died tragically twenty years ago.He had a wonderful disheveled, rebellious look and melancholy pout. With his holed woolen cardigan, plaid shirt, and worn jeans, his allure has inspired countless people and some of the world’s biggest brands.
Now, fashion is going back to rebelliousness. This winter, Hedi Slimane celebrated Courtney Love and added a touch of Sky Ferreira-esque neo-grunge nonchalance to the Yves Saint Laurent campaigns.
An inherited “think for yourself” attitude where harmony and conformity is no longer in fashion. Mismatched jewelry, discordant pairings, and clashing outfits and accessories are the order of the day!
