It’s the start of spring and in Japan is it the season for cherry blossoms. The first blooms are keenly anticipated as people religiously follow the “sakura forecasts.” Then comes the period of Hanami, literally “flower viewing.” It’s a time for shared contemplation and delicious food, and the Japanese traditionally gather for picnics under the beautiful sakura, or cherry trees. An ode to this fleeting period, of which I have fond memories. The country is reborn as it bursts into flower to create a new, monochrome landscape. Temples and parks are enveloped in an endless swathe of pastel pink, perfectly suited to Japan’s kawaii generation.
