Mahito Nashimoto, 34 years old, French-Japanese, Head of the Watches Studio at Swarovski. I was first attracted to the field as my mom was an art teacher. After studying applied arts at high school, I went on to join the Olivier de Serres School in Paris where I specialized in product design. My first role was with the BBDC agency, who are experts in watch design. This varied experience was a real learning curve that allowed me to work with several prestigious clients such as Louis Vuitton, Rochas, and Cartier, among others, before joining Swarovski in 2008 as a watch designer.
My role means I have to be immersed in the watchmaking world. With its strict codes of practice, this specialty requires you to be able to fuse demanding technical constraints with market trends. It takes six years of design training to meet these codes, plus those for the brand’s iconic crystal. As head of the department today, I am gradually trying to move our watch collections towards a more fashion oriented look, often to mirror our jewelry. With a strong focus on product strategy, I oversee the whole process to create unique pieces with our designers.
What do I enjoy most?
I love combining different inspirations to produce creative and innovative designs.
