BEHIND THE AURORA BOREALIS

Celebrating its 60th year anniversary, the iconic finish dates back to the days of Christian Dior

Taking its inspiration by the celestial lightshow of the same namesake, the iconic Aurora Borealis finish dates back to the 1920’s, when the inimitable Christian Dior collaborated with Swarovski to create the iridescent stone for his jewelry collections. This year, the Aurora Borealis stone celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Swarovski has been collaborating with some of the most famous haute couture houses of fashion since their inception. Captivated by the richness and accessibility of the crystal color palettes, designers have looked to Swarovski to provide the unique ingredient for their collections of accessories and fashion collections. Today, the Swarovski crystal color range consists of nearly 200 colors and different coating effects, and is used every season in spectacular combinations, as featured here in the Fluorescent, Supernova and Cosmic jewelry collections. Lending a spectacular sheen to the art-nouveau inspired pieces, the crystal’s iridescence gives an immediate modernity to a series of stylized designs.

Alongside lending the pieces an aura of mystery and intrigue, Nathalie Colin, Creative Director of Swarovski notes: “I love these pieces because they really show the Swarovski color expertise which is an important part of our heritage, and are used for very innovative silhouettes like the long pendant, that can be combined with a short necklace, or the super cool ear jewelry in new shapes.”
